Hope

Hope has terrible timing.

It tends to show up exactly when logic packs its bags and leaves.

When every spreadsheet says “don’t.”

When statistics roll their eyes.

When everyone around you gently suggests that perhaps it’s time to be realistic.

And then…

For reasons I still don’t fully understand…

Hope walks in.

I’ve always been fascinated by that.

Not because I think hope is noble.

Or magical.

Or even wise.

I’m not convinced it always is.

Sometimes I look back at periods in my life and wonder whether what I called hope was, in fact, denial wearing a prettier outfit.

Other times I wonder if what looked like denial from the outside…

Was actually the only reason I managed to keep walking.

How do we tell the difference?

I have no idea.

And maybe that’s exactly why the subject keeps pulling me back.

Hope.

Optimism.

Faith.

Three words that seem to live in the same neighborhood, yet feel like complete strangers.

Optimism seems to trust circumstances.

Faith seems to trust something beyond circumstances.

Hope…

Hope is harder to pin down.

It feels less like a belief.

More like a pulse.

Sometimes so faint you almost miss it.

Sometimes loud enough to carry you through years.

I’ve met people whose hope made absolutely no sense to me.

Until, somehow…

It did.

I’ve also watched hope slowly become a prison.

Not because hope itself is dangerous.

But because letting go of it sometimes feels like betraying something sacred.

Maybe that’s why we hold on long after we’ve stopped believing.

Or maybe I’m mixing up hope with attachment.

I honestly don’t know.

That’s the thing about hope.

The more I try to define it…

The less interested it seems in being defined.

Maybe hope was never meant to give us answers.

Maybe it only asks one quiet question.

“Are you willing to take one more step?”

Not because you know what’s waiting.

But because, even in the fog of not knowing, something inside you whispers…

“Not yet.”

I don’t know where that whisper comes from.

I’m just grateful it visits from time to time.

With curiosity and an open heart.
