Belonging

I’ve been journeying with this word my entire life.

I still do.

It’s one of those words that seems almost self-explanatory.

Until you stop for a moment and ask yourself what it actually means.

Belonging.

Such a simple word.

Such a complex experience.

There is a subtle, yet profound, difference between belonging somewhere…

And feeling that we belong.

They’re not always the same.

We can belong to a family and still feel like strangers.

Belong to a country without ever truly feeling at home.

Belong to a culture while quietly wondering why everyone else seems to understand a language we’ve never quite learned to speak.

I find that fascinating.

Because belonging appears to exist on so many different levels at once.

There is belonging to a family.

To a language.

To a culture.

To a people.

To a country.

To a community.

To friendships.

To a profession.

To a spiritual path.

Some of these stay with us throughout our lives.

Some evolve.

Some quietly fall away.

Some we spend years searching for.

Maybe belonging isn’t one thing at all.

Perhaps it’s an ecosystem.

A living, breathing web that shapes our identity in ways we rarely stop to notice.

And then there is another layer.

The one that intrigues me the most.

The feeling itself.

Because the feeling doesn’t always follow the facts.

You can be surrounded by people who genuinely love you…

And still feel alone.

You can spend decades in the same place…

And never quite feel that it’s home.

And then, unexpectedly…

A conversation.

A stranger.

A place you’ve never been before.

A book.

A piece of music.

A mountain.

And suddenly something inside you quietly says,

“There you are.”

I’ve often wondered what that feeling is.

What awakens it.

Why it appears so effortlessly sometimes…

And remains completely absent at others.

I don’t know.

I also wonder whether belonging changes as we change.

Whether the places, people and communities that once felt like home are supposed to remain so forever.

Or whether part of being alive is allowing our sense of belonging to keep evolving.

Sometimes I think we spend so much time trying to understand who we are

That we forget to ask another question.

Where do I truly feel that I belong?

Not where I’m expected to belong.

Not where I’ve been told I belong.

Not even where I’ve always belonged.

But where something inside me quietly exhales.

I don’t have an answer.

Only a growing fascination with the question.

With curiosity and an open heart.
